North West building Golden Bridges with New England

This week Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Cllr. Ciaran Brogan is leading a Donegal delegation to New England to continue to develop and building on the strong connections that have been fostered with this region over the last number of years.

 

The delegation includes the Council’s Chief Executive Seamus Neely, the Donegal Diaspora Project Manager, Aideen Doherty and Michael O’hEanaigh who is also representing the Council during this visit. 

 

The delegation also includes representatives from Derry City and Strabane District Council led by Mayor Cllr Ellisha McCallion, as well as representatives from the University of Ulster, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, the Institute of Study Abroad and Randox Ltd.

 

“I am delighted to be leading the delegation from Donegal on this visit to New England and to be joining with our neighbours from the Derry City and Strabane District Council area,”said Cllr. Brogan.

 

He added: “Donegal County Council has a strong track record of collaborative working and we recognise the ongoing value of creating meaningful linkages with key partners and of the importance of working with our partners in Northern Ireland.  This delegation is sending out a strong, positive message that the North West region is a proactive, outward looking and innovative region interested in creating and maximising opportunities that will benefit the entire northwest region.”

 

The visit will include meetings with Becker College, Worcester State University, Worcester Chamber of Commerce, UMass Medical School, Boston College Harvard, Drew College, the Boston Irish Business Association, Framingham State University, Merrimack Pharmaceuticals as well as with the new Consulate General Fionnuala Quinlan, the former Senate President Therese Murray and Mayor Sefatia Romeo and CEO Jim Destino of Gloucester.

 

The key focus of the week will also include the Golden Bridges Conference which will take place on the 21st and 22nd October.  This is the seventh annual Golden Bridges Conference which highlights community, business, education, arts and culture in northwest Ireland with their peers in Boston and an important part of the conference is the Golden Bridges Gala Luncheon where those forging transatlantic links are honoured.

 

Seamus Neely, Chief Executive of Donegal County Council explains: “Donegal has many longstanding global connections and the Council has been to the fore in fostering strong relationships through a range of unique and innovative initiatives including the Donegal Diaspora project.

 

“This visit to New England will help us to continue to build on the good work already done in a range of areas including economic development, inward investment, tourism development, education, student exchanges, sport, culture and the creative economy,” he said.
